GARY KOMARIN: THE BIG PAINTINGS

Gary Komarin: The Big Paintings is a monograph which presents for the first time a compendium of large works produced by Komarin over the last thirty years. Working at scale, Komarin explores a unique visual language which floats between abstraction and figuration, and between seriousness and wit. He makes no distinction between painting and drawing; there are no preparatory drawings for these large paintings. Komarin works on the canvas directly, intuitively, quickly - with gusto and fluidity. His paintings refer to their own internal, imaginative scale: often monumental, intimate in close presence, layered and dynamic. Each work is uniquely titled by Komarin, a dialogue between pre-linguistic symbolics of the visual fields and figures and the literary pairing in titling. This monograph presents each piece in two ways: in totality and in transect, affording the viewer a moment to step back and forward within the framework of this book and Komarin’s multi-decade oeuvre.

VESSEL is a monograph exploring the ongoing series by painter Gary Komarin in his larger body of work. Komarin has been producing Vessel works for over 30 years— a deeply embeded form in his artistic practice and pysche. Vessels are inherent civilization, from ceramics of early Greek and Meso-America to the domestic cups and pitchers of modernity, this distinct form and object is a subject of study which allows Komarin to explore, to express, and to enjoy its curves, patterning, and volumes in abstract iteration

GARY KOMARIN – THE CAKE

This Monograph is the first full edition of the iconic Cake images that Mr. Komarin has been painting since the early 90s. The Cakes have been exhibited in galleries spanning from New York to Tokyo, and reside in the permanent collections of contemporary art museums worldwide. Mr. Komarin views the Cake as a marriage between the Architectural and the Domestic - Komarin’s father was an Architect who trained in Europe, and his mother a self-taught baker who hailed from Vienna. Komarin shares stories of the lopsided and misshapen cakes produced by his mother, often dripping off the plate, but always delicious and full of love. These domestic scenes became formative iconography in Komarin’s contemporary work.
